Background

Flowers are highly specialized organs designed to allow for pollinisation and seed development. The Sepals, Petals, Stamen and Carpel are all specific structures allowing for this to happen.


Prior Knowledge

No prior knowledge necessary. Can be taught as a previsit, post visit or stand alone program. This unit is also taught as an activity in some of our onsite programs.


Learning Intentions

In this program students will:

  • Identify the different parts that make up a flower
  • Understand the function of each of these parts
  • Understand the role of a flower on a plant.

Activities

Students will:

  • Label a diagram of a flower
  • Slowly dissect a Lilly, looking at each part under the microscope as we discuss the role of each.

Victorian Curriculum

  • Different living things have different life cycles and depend on each other and the environment to survive (VCSSU058)
  • Living things have structural features and adaptations that help them to survive in their environment (VCSSU074).
