Leaf litter

Leaf litter

Native vegetation and leaf litter on the bank can have a large influence on the ecology of wetlands. Fallen leaves and bark decompose and become part of the soil.

Many small animals live among the decomposing leaves. The leaf litter is cool and damp for frogs.

Rivers and creeks with eucalypts rather than introduced willow trees growing on their banks are more ecologically stable.
