Overview

Support your students in their environmental citizenship journey by participating in this exciting new Museum of Australian Democracy program.   Build student skills in resilience and collaboration. Students are guided through some engaging hands-on coastal activities by the Museum’s experienced education team.  This program will help students to understand how they can play an active role in addressing local environmental issues.


Background

Switch your students on to the prospect of having a democratic voice and participating in community volunteering in order to make a difference to our coastal environments.  Ecolinc’s partnerships with both Coastcare and the Museum of Australian Democracy are behind the design of this exciting new program.  What are the most important issues affecting our coast lines today?  What role can we play in making a difference? Empower your students through this program.

Year Level: Year 5-8

Duration: 1 hour

No, but a number of student handouts will be sent through in preparation for the program.

Learning Intentions

In this video conference students will:

  • Consider how they are able to contribute to important conversations around the environment
  • Understand how to put their thoughts into appropriate actions as citizens
  • Focus on one issue of coastal depredation and ways to lead or participate in real change

Activities

In this video conference students will:

  • Nominate their key questions around coastal environmental issues
  • Explore the meaning behind a sustainability animation
  • Develop a persuasive cartoon around coastal leadership
  • Explore the contents of a ‘beach box’ and consider the impact of various types of rubbish
  • Learn about young change-makers and understand the impact one student can have on protecting the environment
