Background
Animals have features that help them to survive in their environment. Damage to that environment affects the survivlal of those animals as it is not alwys possible for them to change where they live. A new environment may not provide their requirements.
Prior Knowledge
No prior knowledge necessary. Can be taught as a previsit, post visit or stand alone program
Learning Intentions
In this program students will:
- Link the shape of a birds beak with its diet
- Recognise that many birds would be unable to change what they eat if their food source became scares because of the shape of their beaks.
Activities
Students will:
- Match six tools with six tasks such as cutting, digging things out of sand, breaking things apart
- Link the action of each of these tools with a specific birds beak
- Discuss the implications of the specificity of many birds beaks to their survival.

- The growth and survival of living things are affected by the physical conditions of their environment (VCSSU075 [2])
- With guidance, pose questions to clarify practical problems or inform a scientific investigation, and predict what the findings of an investigation might be based on previous experiences or general rules (VCSIS082 [3]).
