Background

Minibeasts provide the perfect hands on experience to begin teaching students about body parts and their functions.


Prior Knowledge

No prior knowledge required. This can be a pre-visit, post-visit or stand alone activity.


Learning Intentions

In this program students will:

  • Recognise different body parts
  • Explain what these body parts are used for
  • Learn how to label a diagram
  • Learn how to use magnifying glasses.

Activities

Students will:

  • Observe a variety of living and preserved minibeasts
  • Complete a table noting which minibeast has which parts
  • Engage in a hands on experience with Spiny Leaf Insects and learn about the adaptations of this unique animal
  • Draw and, where possible, label the parts of this insect.

Victorian Curriculum

  • Living things have a variety of external features and live in different places where their basic needs, including food, water and shelter, are met (VCSSU042 [1])
  • Participate in guided investigations, including making observations using the senses, to explore and answer questions (VCSIS051 [2])
  • Use a range of methods, including drawings and provided tables, to sort information (VCSIS053 [3]).
