Background

The message of reduce, reuse and recycle is an important one for students to learn early. This will help them to develop good habits when it comes to disposing of any rubbish. Students also need to make the link between using paper and destroying the environment.


Prior Knowledge

No prior knowledge necessary. Can be a pre-visit, post-visit or stand-alone program.


Key Learning Question

How can we conserve Earth’s resources by recycling? 


Learning Intentions

In this program students will:

  • Make the link between our overuse of paper and deforestation
  • Learn how to recycle paper
  • Work cooperatively in groups to achieve this outcome

Activities

Students will:

  • Discuss where paper comes from and how much paper is used in a day
  • Make recycled paper
  • Observe paper fibres under the microscope and discover that these fibres are from plants

Victorian Curriculum

For Years 1 & 2:

Science - Chemical sciences

  • Objects are made of materials that have observable properties (VCSSU044)
  • Everyday materials can be physically changed or combined with other materials in a variety of ways for particular purposes (VCSSU045)

Science - Earth and space sciences

  • Earth’s resources are used in a variety of ways (VCSSU047)
  • Participate in guided investigations, including making observations using the senses, to explore and answer questions (VCSIS051)
For Years 3 & 4:

  • Natural and processed materials have a range of physical properties; these properties can influence their use (VCSSU060)

Learning Continuum

The following Learning Continuum is a guide for teachers to show the links between the programs. Ecolinc offers onsite, online and through outreach. The Learning Continuum can be used to access Ecolinc resources to support the development of units of work.

Ecolinc Learn Online is an online learning management system offering interactive online courses for students and teachers. These courses can be undertaken either as a pre-visit, post-visit or stand-alone. Students are encouraged to do the pre-learning course before coming to Ecolinc for an onsite program.

Outreach programs are conducted by an Ecolinc education officer at your school. They are available to moderately disadvantaged primary schools in the Geelong, Ballarat and western suburbs areas (or within 100km radius from Bacchus Marsh)
